Olive growing in Matakana

We believe that Governor George Grey introduced olive trees to Kawau island.

His travels in Europe, South Africa , Australia and the South Pacific made him a great collector of plants (and animals). The Matthews Brothers cultivated them and established the first exotic tree nursery in the area. Many of their plants may be seen around Matakana now- e.g. the coral trees and the Norfolk pines. The oldest tree known in the district was at the Meiklejohn property. Have a look at Big Omaha Wharf to learn their story. The attendees at the recent Meiklejohn re-union were all given samples of these trees, organised by Sally Meiklejohn.

When David Hoskins and Mary Evans first came to Matakana they planted many trees grafted from the Big Omaha tree on their vineyard at Heron's Flight, Sharp Road. Since then many olive trees have been planted and olive groves have developed all over the district. The olive growers are as passionate as wine growers and just as competitive about their product.

The Matakana region grows olives, grapes and other fruit in a unique and distinctive way.
