A quick note to, firstly, say thank you to all those who came to last Sunday's FYO day. It was another great success. If you have never visited us for this, try it sometime. And a special thanks, once again, to both Don and Greg. Without them, it just wouldn't happen.
And also thanks to Greg, we have a special visit this Saturday (April 14), from a pink cadellac filled with blues muscians. They'll turn up around 2pm and have a jam session for an hour or so out back of our place.
1- Amongst all the rain and more rain up here, I am taking the time to remind you all about this weekends Fill Your Own Bottle day. Starting at 9:30am Easter Sunday, we'll be opening the winery to all of you who want to come and fill your bottles. Remember, it's down the drive to the very end- if you haven't visited before.

Well, what can I say about this years vintage? Mary keeps telling me to stop talking about the weather! But for those of you living elsewhere, we have had torrential rain since Sunday (4 days), and it's still raining. The few weeks prior weren't flash either- cool and also wet. Last year, we harvested our Dolcetto on March 6. This year, the grapes are still out in the rain. The Sangiovese is normally scheduled for mid to late April. I'm hoping this means 2012, and not 2013!
A- In December 2006, we opened the new restaurant and winemakers centre on our road frontage. In so doing, we moved the cellar door away from our old place and into the new winemakers centre.
This has been a very interesting summer- lots of rain and wind over the Christmas/New Year season. And then some hot sunny weather since then. In terms of our grapes, we would like the hot sunny days from now on- as they will soon be turning colour and beginning ripening period. I just read in the local paper that Leigh was the hottest place in NZ last year (didn't say anything about rain, though). But that's interesting as it's just down the road.
Due to the very positive response from my last newsletter, we have decided to go ahead with the Fill Your Own Bottle Day. This will be held on Wednesday, Dec 28, from 9:30am. This is our popular FYO red blend.
$9.99/ bottle, with a minimum of 6. We have plenty of bottles if you need them- 50 cents for new ones. Otherwise, bring your own clean ones- which I'm sure you'll have over this time!
We have a very limited quantity of our 2009 premium Sangiovese/Dolcetto in magnums. These look great with their copper-coloured heron, and taste even better! If you are stuck for a gift for that special person, this just might fill that space. $100 per magnum and freight free throughout NZ. Contact me directly david@heronsflight.co.nz, or have a look at our website's order page.
