Sangiovese Reserve 2013
As we all know, the 2013 summer had drought conditions. Very little rain fell between February and mid-April.
We harvested the Sangiovese in near perfect condition over 3 days in mid-April 2013.
With the 2013 harvest, we radically changed our fermentation techniques. Previously, our wine was pressed at the end of the alcoholic fermentation. In 2013, we fermented without hand-plunging to keep the integrity of the cap. We then held the wine post ferment on the skins for an average of 25 days.
With the long maceration, we were able to build the tannin structure without the need for lengthy time in oak barrels. The wine was matured for only about 6 months in barriques- 20% new.
The wine has a deep ruby colour and concentrated palate. The nose is redolent of dark forest floor berries and brambles, which follows through onto the back palate. Rich and round tannins surround the wine, ensuring that it will age for many years. Feminine and sophisticated- like a good Italian soprano!
