Group Wine Tasting
Wine tasting, group tutored tastings, vineyard tours and the Great Heron’s Flight Wine Experience
Heron’s Flight is the only vineyard exclusively growing Italian winegrapes in NZ. Because of this, our wines are very unique. We make only two wines a year: Sangiovese and Dolcetto. Both premium NZ red wines. We enjoy hosting group tastings and tours.
Casual Tastings
We are open everyday for tastings, and we welcome the casual visitor. Tastings are conducted in the Winemakers Centre and cost $10. Please note that this charge is for the wine and visitors are welcome to share the tasting.
Tutored Tastings
Our tutored tastings reflect the uniqueness of our wines. Every tasting begins with a brief overview of the Matakana wine region- its history, grapes grown, and the various cellar door experiences available.
We then have a look at the development of the wines at Heron’s Flight over the past 20 years, followed by an in depth tasting of both the Dolcetto and Sangiovese. As these wines are made from Italian varietals, we conclude with a discussion of where these wine styles fit into the culture of Italian wines.
The cost for this is $10 per head, with a minimum of 10 people. Expect to take about 45 minutes.
Vineyard and Winery Tours
For groups of 10 or more, we conduct specialised vineyard tours looking at viticultural methods and winemaking techniques applied to our winegrapes.
This is followed by a tutored tasting of our wines.
Expect to take at least one to one and a half hours. The cost is $15 per person.
For both the group tutored tasting and the vineyard tours, we prefer to conduct these in the morning prior to lunch. These may not be available later in the day.
The Great Heron’s Flight Wine Experience
We have been producing Sangiovese from our site since the 1998 vintage.
For those groups of 10 or more who wish to participate in an absolutely unique wine experience, we will open 6 vintages of our Sangiovese beginning with the 1998. This will be conducted in our Wine Library and be a tutored tasting of each vintage.
When possible, we will also walk within the vineyard and talk about the viticulture surrounding the growing of Sangiovese on our site.
The tasting will be coordinated with vineyard tasting platters.
Cost: $120 per person.
