Made in Matakana since 1987
We’re proud to be Matakana’s original cellar door.
Made with love. Made with family. Made with Italian grapes. Made with care and craft and constancy. Made without haste. Made with pleasure. Made with conversation and conviviality and no small amount of laughter. Made in a winery attached to an intimate little tasting room at the end of a funny little drive. Just follow the clink of glasses.
Our wines
Deep ruby, with a concentrated palate. Aromas of late summer fruits with hints of spice from the forest floor. Rich and round tannins surround the wine, ensuring longevity. Supple and charming, integrated and sophisticated. Aged in French Oak for 24 months.
Dolcetto comes from Piedmonte, NW Italy. In 2023, the grapes were picked on March 11, specifically for our Rosato.
Made in a traditional Italian off-dry style, the juice was stop-fermented to leave some of the natural sweetness of the juice.
The summer of 2023 was full of rain and storms. One of our 100 year old pine trees blew over in the January cyclone. There was very little sun, meaning that the resulting colour of the Rosato is a light straw. But the nose is packed with fruit flavours.
The palate is rich, sweet and soft on the front, but ‘zingy’ on the finish. This is deliberate to make it refreshing and balance the natural residual sugars on the front palate. Also, like good Italian rose, it is slightly effervescent which helps it dance across the palate!
Enjoy either chilled or at room temperature, with food or on its own.
This is a unique wine.
Meaning ‘The Flight’ in Italian, 2021’s Volare is mid-weight with a delicious red berry palate. To enhance the palate, we blended 30% Dolcetto into the Volare. The focus is on the fruit rather than oak. The soft tannins lift pasta dishes and enhance most cheese and meat dishes. A perfect party wine.
Our story
Mary and David noticed that the best conversations, the most pleasurable times, came over drinking wine. And they wanted to capture that. So, Heron’s Flight was born. 35 years on they’re still here, capturing the essence, romance and simplicity of Italian life in an original Matakana way.
