Visit our Matakana Tasting Room

We have wines to share, stories to tell and a rather lovely place to do both.

Our small vineyard is family-oriented, with three generations living on the property. We are as excited as ever to share our wines — and our almost 40-year history in Matakana — within our new Tasting Room.

Come for a tasting, build yourself a platter, settle in with a glass of wine — or do all three.

Just a 45-minute drive from Auckland, we’re open daily from 11am to 5pm.

Wine tastings

We do things a little differently here.

Heron's Flight is dedicated to Italian grape varieties, particularly Sangiovese and Dolcetto. From these grapes, we make five distinctly different wines, and our Tasting Room is the best place to discover them.

Our tastings are offered in two simple flights, each presented on a tray with information about the wines so you can taste at your own pace.

Flight 1 ($15) is a taste of the lighter side of Heron’s Flight, featuring our Dolcetto Rosato, il Volo Dolcetto and Volare Sangiovese.

Flight 2 ($20) takes a closer look at Sangiovese through two of our more distinctive expressions: the Reserve and Amphora.

Not sure which to choose? We’re always happy to talk you through the wines when you arrive.

The flights can also be shared if you’re visiting casually and simply want to have a taste.

Build your own platter

Our deli. Your platter. We've deliberately kept things relaxed.

Our Tasting Room has a small deli filled with a changing selection of New Zealand cheeses, cured meats, preserves, crackers and other good things to nibble on.

Choose whatever takes your fancy and build your own platter at the table. We'll provide the boards, knives, utensils and everything else you need.

There's no set menu and no need to order a platter in advance.

Simply choose what you'd like from the deli, find yourself a spot and add a glass (or a bottle!) of Heron's Flight wine.

Lunch, more or less, sorted.

Tutored Group Tastings

We specialise in hosted tastings that take you a little deeper into Heron's Flight.

We've been growing grapes in Matakana since the 1980s and have watched the region evolve around us. Our tutored tastings explore some of that history, along with why we chose to grow Italian rather than French grape varieties, the origins of Sangiovese and Dolcetto, and the different ways we work with them here in Matakana.

Group tutored tastings generally take around one hour and feature our full portfolio.

Bookings are essential (please note, not available on weekends).
Minimum 10 people per group at $35 per person.

ENQUIRE ABOUT A TUTORED GROUP TASTING

Any wine purchased following a tutored tasting is over and above the initial fee.
